The sun's outer atmosphere, or corona, viewed in polarized light, was photographed in April 1980 by the coronagraph-polarimeter aboard the Solar Maximum Mission satellite. Designed by a scientist from the High Altitude Observatory, part of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, this coronagraph took detailed pictures of the corona.
