Show moreIn 1986, the National Science Foundation's Division of Atmospheric Sciences (ATM) and the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) jointly undertook the development of a long-range plan for the atmospheric sciences. A committee of scientists was convened by NSF and UCAR to produce a plan that would have priorities for support for the next six years. Other federal agencies that provide the majority of the support for atmospheric sciences joined in the planning effort. A draft plan was then given wide exposure to the appropriate National Academy of Sciences committee, The UCAR Board of Trustees and Members' Representatives, the NSF Advisory Committee for Atmospheric Sciences, the Subcommittee for Atmospheric Research of the Committee for Atmosphere and Oceans, and the senior management of the foundation. This final plan will be a useful blueprint to guide atmospheric sciences research activities well into the 1990s. Dr. John A. Dutton was chairman of the committee. Show less
