Show moreUsing multiple Fabry-Perot interferometers and other instruments at northern high latitudes, we organized an observational campaign to examine the polar cap thermospheric winds and temperatures during two small substorm events in the winter of 2008. These events are associated with solar corona holes. It will be interesting to examine these small events during solar minimum to lay a baseline for future comparisons with more active solar period. We compare the ground based observations with NCAR-TIEGCM simulations. The goal is to have a better understanding of the morphology of the polar cap thermosphere convection pattern. We will examine how the IMF orientation affects the ion drift and neutral wind the polar cap. Particularly during the northward IMF Bz conditions when the ion drift is strongly sunward, we may even see abatement of thermospheric winds. We will also study the ISR ion drift data from various locations. We expect more progresses in this area when the Resolute incoherent scatter radar (RISR) become available. Show less
