Shelf (arcus) clouds are created along the edges of thunderstorms by the outflow of rain-filled air. Shown here is an arcus cloud developing to the left of a heavy rain shaft. Shelf clouds with their edges of rain are seen more distinctly in the western United States because of the drier air and higher cloud bases.
