Delano, Jack. American Photographer. Born: Jack Ovcharov in Kiev, Russia, 1 August 1914; immigrated to the United States in 1923: naturalized, 1928; adopted the name Delano, 1940. Education: Attended the Settlement Music School, Philadelphia, 1925-33 (scholarship student: studied violin, viola, and composition); Central High School, Philadelphia, 1928-32; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, 1932-37 (Cresson Travelling Scholar, 1936-37), Dip. 1937. Military Service: Served in the Air Transport Command, United States Army Corps of Engineers, 1943-46: Captain. Family: Married Irene Esser in 1940; children: Pablo and Laura. Career: Took first photographs while travelling in Europe, 1936-37; photographer with the Works Progress Administration (WPA) Project, New York, 1937-39; freelance photographer, working mainly for the United Fund, New York, 1939-40; Staff Photographer, under Roy Stryker, Farm Security Administration, Washington, D.C., and throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, 1940-43; Photographer, Government of Puerto Rico, 1946-47; Director of Motion Picture Services, Government of Puerto Rico, 1947-53; independent film-maker, San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1953-57; Director of Programming, Puerto Rican Educational Television, 1957-64; General Manager, Puerto Rican Government Radio and Television Service, 1969; independent photographer, film-maker, book illustrator, and graphics consultant, and music teacher at the Puerto Rico Conservatory, 1969-79; teacher of film animation techniques at Sacred Heart University; designer of San Juan Children's Museum and Pablo Casals Museum. Since 1979, working as a photographer on grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Recipient: Guggenheim Fellowship in Photography, 1945; Unesco Travelling Fellowship, Europe and Asia, 1960; Children's Art Books Award, with Irene Delano, Brooklyn Museum, New York, 1973; National Endowment for the Arts Grant, 1979; Certificate of Merit, Casa Aboy, San Juan, 1983; Composers Award, Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, 1984; ASCAP Award for Musical Composition, 1987.
