Strong was born in Brownington, Vermont, in 1833, was graduated from Beloit College in 1858 and from the Union Theological Seminary in 1862, and came to Minnesota in 1865. He served as a Congregational pastor in Faribault for five years and as president of Carleton College from 1870 to 1903.
