Edgar A. Guest was born August 20, 1881 in Birmingham, England. He immigrated with his family to the United States in the early 1890s, settling in Detroit. In 1895 he came to work for the Detroit Free Press as an office boy. He later moved to the news department as a cub reporter. One temporary assignment had Guest clipping filler items (such as poetry) for reprinting. On his own, he began writing similar kinds of verse and offering them to the newspaper for publication. The newspaper soon gave Guest his own column which he filled with sentimental poetry and observations on daily life. His poetry appealed to Detroits's and then with republication, to the nation's common folk. Guest wrote about family, home, patriotism, and the pleasures of everyday life. Collections of his verse became enormous best selling books with titles such as A heap o' livin' ; Just folks ; When day is done ; and Over here (written during World War I.). During the 1930s, Guest was host of two different radio programs where he read his poetry and offered his own observations on the times.

Guest was employed by the Detroit Free Press for over sixty-five years. He died August 5, 1959.
