Grimm was a German polymathic scholar, literary historian, art critic and philosopher. He and his wife, Gisela von Arnim Grimm, met Ralph Waldo Emerson and his daughter Ellen Tucker Emerson in 1873, but the friendship flourished via correspondence from 1856 until 1882 when RWE died.

Herman Grimm, the son of Wilhelm of Brothers Grimm fame, was a German author and scholar. He specialized in the history of literature and art, taught at the University of Berlin, and wrote books on Michelangelo, Dürer, and Goethe. He also wrote plays and, notably, essays.
