Origin of the basic musical theme uncertain. Possibly derived from the traditional plan chant melody with German words used by Luther ca. 1524 to replace the Latin Credo in Unum Deum of the Mass. This transcription combines two separate works as listed in the Schmieder Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis. The Pastorale composed between 1703 and 1707. Its authenticity is not absolutely certain. The Prelude and Fugue is no. 4 of Eight Little Preludes and Fugues for the organ composed before 1710. All eight may possibly be by Johann Ludwig Krebs or by his father Johann Tobias Krebs.
