William Ballard Preston was born in Montgomery County, Virginia on 29 November 1805. A prominent lawyer before moving into politics, he was appointed Secretary of the Navy by President Taylor in 1849. During the Civil War, he served as a senator from Virginia in the Congress of the Confederate States until his death in 1862.
