Júlio Dantas was a Portuguese doctor, poet, diplomat, and writer. Dantas was born in Lagos, Portugal in 1876. After completing his studies in medicine at the University of Lisbon, he served as a doctor in the Portuguese army. Dantas was also a member, and later, president, of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon. He also held political positions in Portugal as Minister of Education, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and ambassador to Brazil. In addition to his government positions, Dantas wrote numerous poems, plays, and novels. One of his best known works is the play A ceia dos cardeaes published in 1902, and another is O que morreu de amor. Some of his other works include a collection of poetry, Nada, and historical works such as Pátria Portuguesa. Júlio Dantas died in Lisbon, Portugal in 1962.
