Journalist, librarian, and Shakespearean literary scholar. Created a sensation when he announced the discovery of a copy of the Second Folio (1632) with extensive ms. annotations in a 17th century hand (the 'Perkins Folio'); this copy turned out to be a forgery.

Controversial Shakespearian critic and editor. His History of English dramatic poetry and annals of the stage appeared in 1831 and was among the first of his publications to provide valuable new information about its subject along with documents that have been accused of inauthenticity. He was a leading Shakespeare scholar and made important contributions to the study of Elizabethan and Jacobean drama, but too often "amplified" what he found. Collier also administered various antiquarian publication societies and served as an agent for collectors.
