Skidmore College became a four-year liberal arts college in 1922 and in the same year began to offer its students a baccalaureate degree in nursing in cooperation with Mary McClellan Hospital. In 1942 the Department of Nursing moved to New York City, which offered students a greater diversity of healthcare organizations and hospitals for their clinical studies. The program found success in New York and enjoyed an excellent reputation among nursing schools under the leadership of Agnes Gelinas, who served as department chair from 1928 until her retirement in 1965. In 1971 the program, which was initially housed in the New York University Medical Center, moved to its own building on 38th Street. Despite these and other efforts by the college to strengthen the program, enrollments began to decrease in the 1970's. In the face of increasing expenses and low enrollments the trustees voted to close the program in 1982. The last nursing students graduated in 1985.
