James E. Folsom was born 1908 Oct. 9 to Joshua Marion and Eulala Cornelia Dunnavant Folsom in Farmer's Academy, Coffee County, Ala. When he was two the Folsom family moved to Elba. James E. was the sixth of seven children.

Folsom attended public schools and attended both the University of Ala. and Howard College for short stints in the years 1927-1929. During the Depression Folsom worked in the Civil Works Administration, heading up the Marshall Co. office until 1934. He entered the insurance business in the 1930s, after attending George Washington University in 1935.

On 1936 Dec. 25 James E. Folsom married Sarah Carnley, and in 1938 they moved to Cullman, Cullman Co., Ala. She died 1944 July. After several political defeats Folsom was elected Governor of Ala. in 1946 and in 1954. On 1948 May 5 Folsom married Jamelle Moore.

Folsom and his first wife had two children: Rachel and Melissa. Folsom and his second wife had six children: James Elisha, Andrew Jackson, Jamelle Alabama, Thelma Ebelene, Joshua, and Eulala Cornelia.

Folsom was a Baptist, Elk, and Mason. He died 1987 Nov. 21 of heart failure.
