James R. Osgood was a native of Maine who went to work for the publishing house of Ticknor and Fields. He eventually founded the subsidiary group James R. Osgood & Co. which was associated with many fine writers. The firm struggled financially, and when Osgood stepped down, was dissolved into Houghton, Mifflin.

Publisher. With James T. Fields, he established the firm of Fields, Osborn, & Co. in 1868. In 1871 the firm became R. Osgood & Co. with Osgood & Benjamin H. Ticknor as partners. In 1878, the firm merged with H. O. Houghton, Cambridge to form Houghton, Osborn & Company. Osborn was best known for his "partnership" with Samuel Clemens, i.e. Mark Twain. In 1885 the firm went bankrupt and Osgood went to work for Harper's.
