Locke was educated at Harvard University (A.B., 1905; A.M., 1915). He taught at Brown University, Washburn College, Topeka, Kansas and the University of Wisconsin before coming to the Smith College Music Dept. in 1915. Locke taught, composed and arranged scores, as well as performed during his tenure. He retired in 1952 and died June 19, 1969.
