Sir John Lubbock was born in London, educated at Eton, and joined his father's bank. He continued his studies, influenced by his father's friend Charles Darwin, and became an expert on the natural sciences, writing books on animals, insects, plants, geology, and prehistory. He served as a member of Parliament, 1870-1900, until he became Lord Avebury and moved to the House of Lords.
