Chrysostom Verwyst was born in Holland on Nov. 23, 1841.
He emigrated to America with his family in 1848 and settled in Boston. Later his family purchased land in Holland, Wisc. in 1855 where they became farmers. Verwyst attended the Seminary of St. Francis between 1861 and 1865 in Milwaukee and over the next twenty years was assigned to various parishes in Wisconsin. In 1882 he joined the Franciscan Order and was stationed most of the remainder of his life in northern Wisconsin near the town of Bayfield. He spent much time during the last three decades of his life researching the Ojibwa language.
