Born in 1902 as Jean Carl Hertzog in Lyons, France. Hertzog came to El Paso, Texas in 1923 to work for W.S. McMath & Co. In 1934, he started his own print shop, The Press of Carl Hertzog. Later, he went into partnership with Dale Resler after their purchase of Guynes Printing Co. in 1944. In 1948, Hertzog took a teaching position at the Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy. He founded the college print shop that became Texas Western Press. He retired as TWP director in 1972 but had an office in the Library at UTEP, acting as consultant until his death in 1984.
