Daniel Sturges (1765-1823) was born in 1765 in Norborne Parish, Virginia, to Reverend Daniel and Eleanor Sturges. In approximately 1789, the family moved from Virginia to South Carolina; the next year they moved again, this time to Georgia. Sturges was elected the Surveyor-General of Georgia on January 26, 1797, a position he held for 58 years. He married Elizabeth Lewis three years after his election to the post.
