Boyd moved from place to place through Louisiana, Illinois, and the East, finally settling in Portland, Me.

He was educated at Bowdoin College, appointed sheriff of Lafayette, La., in 1835, worked as aide-de-camp and adjutant in the Army from 1813 to 1817, and earned a colonelcy; his main work was in real estate.
