He spent two years of graduate study in Copenhagen, Denmark, from 1954-1955 and finished his Master's of Arts degree at the University of Michigan in 1958. Jan Boyer Wahl was a Fulbright scholar in Copenhagen (1953-54). He has won the Avery Hopwood Award in fiction (1955), the Young Critics award at the International Children's Book Fair (1969), an ALA Notable Book citation (1974), Parents' Choice literary award (1982) the Redbook award (1987).
