Bartel J. Jonkman was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1914 and immediately began the practice of law in his Grand Rapids. He was assistant prosecuting attorney of Kent County, Michigan, 1915-1920, and prosecuting attorney, 1929-1936. In February 1940, Jonkman was elected as a Republican to fill out the term of U.S. Congressman Carl E. Mapes. He was elected in his own right that same year and then re-elected three times, serving until January 1949. He then resumed the practice of law in Grand Rapids. He died June 13, 1955.
