John Joseph Beer was born July 17, 1927 at Saarbrucken, Germany, and received his Ph.D. in the history of science from the University of Illinois in 1956. After early employment at Hanover College (1956-57), Eastern Illinois University (1957-58), and Oklahoma State University (1958-1961), Beer secured a position at the University of Delaware, where he taught the history of science and the history of chemistry until his retirement in 1992. With Eugene S. Ferguson, George Basalla and David A. Hounshell, Beer played a major role in developing the university's program in the history of technology and the Hagley Fellowship Program.
