Paul O'Dwyer is the younger brother of Mayor William O'Dwyer. William O'Dwyer was New York City's one-hundredth Mayor who served from 1946 to 1950. He resigned September 2, 1950. This group of photographs was part of Paul O'Dwyers's personal collection.

Paul O'Dwyer is the younger brother of Mayor William O'Dwyer who served from 1946 to 1950. Paul O'Dwyer is himself a major participant in the political arena. From 1963 to 1965, Paul O'Dwyer was a Council-At-Large in New York City. In 1968, he was the Democratic Nominee for the U.S. Senate. From 1973 to 1978, he was New York City Council President. In 1986, he was appointed Manhattan Borough Historian and in 1990, Mayor Dinkins appointed him as Commissioner of the New York City Commission for the United Nations and Consular Corps. Prior to his political career, Paul O'Dwyer was a well-known labor and civil rights attorney. The bulk of this collection is comprised of correspondence which documents his activities prior to becoming a public official of New York City. The later correspondence pertains to the publication of "Beyond the Golden Door," a memoir by former Mayor William O'Dwyer and edited by Paul O'Dwyer.

From 1963 to 1965, Paul O'Dwyer was Manhattan Councilman-at-large. In 1968, he was the U.S. Senate Democratic nominee. From 1973 to 1978, he was New York City Council President. Beginning in 1986, he was appointed Borough Historian of Manhattan and in 1990, he was appointed Commissioner of the United Nations and Consular Corps. Prior to becoming a civil servant, Paul O'Dwyer was a well known labor and civil rights attorney. He is the younger brother of former New York City Mayor William O'Dwyer.
