Dr. Joseph F. Volker was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, in 1913. He earned a D.M.D. degree from Indiana University and an A.B., M.S. and Ph. D., from the University of Rochester. He was serving as dean of Tufts College Dental School in Boston when the University of Alabama chose him to head its new dental program in Birmingham. Accepting these duties in 1948, Volker instituted a rigorous course of study that was closely allied with the Medical College of Alabama. From 1955 to 1965, he also served as director of research and graduate studies. In 1961, Volker went to Arizona to conduct the Arizona Medical School Study. After his return in 1962, he was named vice president for health affairs of the University of Alabama. In 1966, he became vice president for Birmingham affairs, in 1968 executive vice president, and when the Birmingham campus of the University of Alabama became an independent campus, president. Volker was named chancellor of the University of Alabama System in 1976, and upon his in 1982, he became a distinguished professor of UAB. He died in 1989.
