Because of World War II the games were not held until 1948 in London. Following that they were held in Helainke in 1952, Melbourne in 1956, Rome In 1960 and Tokyo in 1964. For each of these years Detroit made a strong bid and was the official U. S. contender in 1960 and 1964. Mr. Frederick C. Matthaei was during all of these years the moving spirit behind Detroit's offer. He was born in Detroit in 1892, attended Western High School and the University of Michigan and was founder and past president of the American Metal Products Company.
