The Busch-Reisinger Museum was founded in 1903 as the Germanic Museum, by Kuno Francke, Professor of German Literature at Harvard. Francke obtained funding from the Busch and Reisinger families to build the present structure, which opened in 1921. In 1930 The Germanic Museum became part of the Fine Arts Department, under the direction of Professor Charles Kuhn. It was renamed the Busch-Reisinger Museum in 1950.
