Sherwood was a noted American dramatist. He was born in New Rochelle, N.Y., graduated from Harvard in 1918, and served in World War I. He wrote for Vanity Fair and Life magazines, serving as editor of the latter from 1924 to 1928. His first play, written in 1927, was an immediate success. He won Pulitzer prizes for many of his plays and later in his career wrote film scripts.

Sherwood was an American dramatist and political writer. Between 1940 and 1945 he was the principal speech writer for Franklin Delano Roosevelt and overseas director of the Office of War Information. Sherwood, who had won three Pulitzer prizes for his plays, won a fourth for Roosevelt and Hopkins, his book chronicling World War II.

Biographical Note
Robert Emmet Sherwood was born April 4, 1896, in New Rochelle, N.Y. Sherwood was a playwright, editor, screen writer, and cofounder of the Playwrights’ Company, a producing company. He wrote speeches for President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II and from 1941 to 1944 served as head of the overseas branch of the Office of War Information. Sherwood’s book Roosevelt and Hopkins (1948) won the Pulitzer Prize, as did several plays, including The Road to Rome (1927) and Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1938). His original screenplay, The Best Years of Our Lives, won the Academy Award in 1946. Sherwood died in New York, November 14, 1955.
