James Henry Lane (1833-1907), a Virginian by birth and education, received his commission as brigadier general in the Army of Northern Virginia in 1862. After the war he taught at several institutions, most particularly the Alabama Polytechnic Institute from 1882-1907.

Lane, a professor at Virginia Military Institute in 1861, served as major of the 1st North Carolina Infantry and colonel of the 28th North Carolina Infantry. He was appointed brigadier general in November 1862. After the war, he taught at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Missouri School of Mines, and Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama.
