David A. Ogden was born in Morristown, N.J. He attended King's College (Columbia University) and later became a lawyer. David A. Ogden was a U.S. Congressman representing the 18th district of New York State from 1817-1819. He served as a legal advisor, along with his brother Thomas L., to the Holland Land Company, which was involved in land speculation and settlement in western New York. Later, the brothers formed their own land company, which dealt with lands along the New York/Canada border. They were also business associates of Alexander Hamilton.
