Edward Calvin Donnelly was born on March 17, 1861 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the son of Mary Ann (Connelly) Donnelly and John Donnelly, founder of the outdoor advertising company John Donnelly & Sons (1850). Edward C. Donnelly took over the business in 1882 when John Donnelly died. In 1891, he helped to found the Associated Bill Posters Association. He was active in many charitable and civic organizations, including the Boston Chamber of Commerce, the Clover Club, and the Catholic Union. He also served as trustee for the Union Institution for Savings. He married Mary Julia Mahoney and they had four children: John, Catherine, Mary Aline, and Edward C. Donnelly, Jr. He died in Boston on January 18, 1927.
