The territorial militia of Utah (est. 1852) was a peace-keeping force under the direction of the territorial governor. The militia originally enlisted men from the earlier Mormon Battalion and Nauvoo Legion, and retained the name of the latter group. During its existence it participated in Indian campaigns, resisted the 1857 Utah Expedition, and guarded mail and freight routes. The force was administered by a lieutenant-general: Daniel H. Wells (1852-1870) and Patrick Conner (1870-1887). In 1887 the militia was disbanded under a provision of the Edmunds-Tucker Act.
