Founded in 1782 by A. M. Lorgna, the Academy was the only national scientific institution before the "Risorgimento". After 1848 it lost some of its importance, due to the emergence of the Accademia dei Lincei as National Academy after the unity (1870). All the prominent Italian scientists have been, and are, among its 40 members.
