Variant namesHide Profile
The Wisconsin State Prison at Waupun was opened in July 1851. It was under the jurisdiction of the State Board of Supervisors (WIHV87-A1267) in 1881, then the State Board of Control (WIHV85-A2106) in 1891. Until the opening of the Women's Prison at Taycheedah (see WIHV88-A50) in 1933, it served as a maximum security facility for both men and women and since then for men only. In 1939, the prison became part of the newly created Department of Public Welfare's (WIHV85-A488) Division of Corrections (WIHV85-A281). In 1967, under agency reorganization, the prison and Division were transferred to the Department of Health and Social Services (WIHV85-A674). In July 1979, it became the Waupun Correctional Institution (WIHV88-A43).
