Henry Watterson, the son of a Tennessee Democratic Congressman, was one the most savvy and influential political journalists of the 19th century. His essays and editorials, fearless and educational, were reprinted in numerous forms. He is widely credited for working to improve North/South relations in the years following the American Civil War.

Henry Watterson was the only son of Harvey Watterson, a U.S. Congressman from Tennessee. During his career, Henry Watterson wrote for such publications as HARPER'S WEEKLY, the NEW YORK TIMES, and the NEW YORK TRIBUNE. After serving in the Confederate army during the Civil War, he re-established the REPUBLICAN BANNER newspaper of Nashville before becoming managing editor of the Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL in 1868. For fifty years he retained this position and was the most influential and respected newspaper man of his time, taking strong positions devoted to Jeffersonian philosophy. In 1918 he retired to private life.

Henry Watterson (1840-1921) was an American journalist, lecturer and author. He was a Confederate soldier under Nathan Bedford Forrest, a one-term United States Representative from Kentucky, and founder and editor of the Louisville Courier-Journal .
