William Harold (Hal) Cowley was born in Petersburg, Virginia, May 28, 1899; received degrees from Dartmouth College (1924) and University of Chicago (Ph.D. in 1930). He held various administrative positions in the field of higher education (Assistant to the President and Head of Placement Services at the University of Chicago (1927-1929), professor of psychology at Ohio State (1931-1937); President of Hamilton College (1938-1944); professor of higher education at Stanford (1945-1978). In 1954 he was named David Jacks Professor of Higher Education at Stanford. He died in Palo Alto, California in 1978.
