An American historian, Haskins taught at Johns Hopkins (1889-1892), Wisconsin (1892-1902), and Harvard (1902-1931). He was a leading medievalist of his generation and a prominent member of the group of presidential advisers known as "The Inquiry," 1917. As delegate to the Paris Peace Conference, 1918-1919, Haskins advanced the solution eventually adopted for the Saar.

Haskins received an honorary degree from Harvard in 1908; taught history and served as Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard.
