Stearns graduated from Harvard College (1797), practised law in Chelmsford, Mass. until 1815, taught at Harvard Law School (1815-1829), served as District Attorney for Middlesex County (1813-1823) and edited a series of revisions of the laws of Massachusetts (1798-1821).
