Franklin Leonard Stone was born in Vermont in 1812. He lived for several years in Illinois before moving to the Gallatin Valley of southwestern Montana, where he farmed, raised cattle, and taught school. Stone served as Gallatin County's first superintendent of schools. Sarah Barber, his wife, was a native of Illinois. Stone died near Old Gallatin, Montana, in 1884.
