George Milton Smith was born in 1879 in Hong Kong, where his father was master of ships and a merchant in the China trade. Upon completion of his studies in natural history at Yale College in 1901, he entered the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, earning his M.D. in 1905. After a four-year internship and residency, Smith was successively instructor in clinical surgery at Columbia Medical School, associate in pathology at Washington University, Director of the Barnard Skin and Cancer Hospital, and physician to the Scoville Manufacturing Company in Waterbury, Connecticut. In 1933 he became a Research Associate in the Department of Anatomy at the Yale Medical School, a post he retained until his death. Smith served with the Yale Unit (Mobile Hospital No. 39) in World War I. In World War II, he was commissioned Senior Surgeon in the United States Public Health Service Reserve, served as a consultant to the Surgeon General of the United States Army, and was a member of numerous state and national medical preparedness and defense committees.
