Konkapot, Chief

Leader, with Umpachenee, of the Housatonic tribe of Mohicans of southwest Massachusetts.

In January, 1734/35, a general council of several Mohican tribes met to ratify the decision of Konkapot and Umpachenee to allow the establishment of a Christian mission by John Sergeant (at Stockbridge under the auspices of the Company for Propagation of the Gospel). In the festivities that followed the council, drunken participants scorned the Housatonic's decision to adopt English ways. When several members of the tribe, including Umpachenee's family, fell ill and two died, the Housatonics believed they had been poisoned.
