Born in Ulster County, N.Y., James Clinton (1736-1812) was a soldier who served in the French and Indian and Revolutionary Wars. During the French and Indian War, Clinton was part of the expedition that captured Fort Frontenac in Ontario, Canada. During the Revolutionary War, Clinton served as a Brigadier General in the Continental Army and took part in several campaigns throughout New York State. One of Clinton's sons, DeWitt Clinton (1769-1828), served as Governor of New York State from 1817 to 1821 and 1825 to 1828.
