James O. Murfin was born January 7, 1875, in Portsmouth, Ohio. He attended the University of Michigan and received literary and law degrees in 1895 and 1896. From 1897 to 1908 Murfin was a member of the law firm of Bowen, Douglas, Whiting and Murfin in Detroit, Michigan. Murfin served as a Republican member of the Michigan state senate (1901-1903); as judge of the Detroit Circuit Court (1908-1912); and as regent of the University of Michigan (1918-1933 and 1934-1937). During World War I, he served as chairman of district board number one for the Eastern District of Michigan.
