Frye, Joseph, 1712-1794

Renowned military leader from colonial Maine; obtained the rank of general in the Massachusetts militia after serving in King George's War and the French and Indian War; the town of Fryeburg, Me., was named for him.

Joseph Frye, soldier, was born in Andover, Mass. in 1712.

He began his military career in 1745 as an ensign in Hale's regiment which took part in the capture of Louisburg. During the French and Indian War, Frye served as a major in the expedition to Nova Scotia (1755-1756) that expelled a portion of the Acadians. While a resident of Andover, Frye also was a representative to the General Court. In 1770 he settle in Maine, where he died in 1794.
