Jean Giono was born in 1895 in Manosque, a small Provençal town in southwestern France. He wrote over fifty books and screenplays, and his other novels include The song of the world, Blue boy, and Horseman on the roof, which was made into a major motion picture in the United States. A writer of great power and original genius, Giono died in 1970.
