Lesley Byrd Simpson was born in St. Louis, Mo. on Mar. 21, 1891. He received his bachelor's and doctoral degrees at U.C. Berkeley and served on the faculty of the Spanish Dept. from 1928 to 1955. He was well known for his publications in both Spanish and Latin American history and literature. His best known books are "Many Mexicos," and "The Encomienda in New Spain : the beginning of Spanish Mexico."
