Business executive and management theorist. Barnard attended Harvard for three years but left in 1909 and went to work for A.T. & T. He rose rapidly in the company, becoming president of the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company in 1927. He left the Bell system in 1948 and served for four years as president of the Rockefeller Foundation. Barnard is most famous for his classic study of the theory of organization The Functions of the Executive, published in 1938.
