Biographical note: Army officer; Edward J. Spaulding was born about 1836 in New York and in 1857, enlisted at Chicago, Illinois in the 2nd Dragoons. He served in the Civil War; was stationed at Fort Bidwell in northeastern California with Company C, 2nd Cavalry; and in 1886 was promoted to major, served in the 4th Cavalry and arrived in Arizona serving first at Fort Huachuca and then at Fort McDowell. He died in a shooting accident December 10, 1888.
