The Repauno Chemical Company was incorporated in 1880 and constructed a high explosives works at Gibbstown, N.J. It was consolidated with a number of other high explosives manufacturers to form the Eastern Dynamite Company in 1895. Subsequently the operations passed under the control of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, becoming part of its Explosives Deartment. From the beginning the du Pont family and company held substantial interests in the Repauno operation. Lammot du Pont (1831-1884), its first president, was succeeded by William du Pont (1855-1928). The Eastern Dynamite Company was formally merged into the Du Pont Company in 1912.
